1. Learn Swedish

It is a good idea to start learning Swedish before you arrive in Sweden. Swedish language skills are an important key to social life as well as a requirement for most jobs in Arvika.

2. Job market orientation

Whether you want to get a job or start your own business it is a good idea to read about the job market, the local population and customer base and even to start networking on LinkedIn or in other ways.

Having a connection to Arvika is important for most local employers. So have a concrete plan to move here and preferably an address before you start sending applications.

Buying a home
Arvika has a charming and thoughtfully designed town center with popular suburbs surrounding it such as Dottevik, Rackstad, Taserud and Solvik.
In addition to the central town of Arvika and nearby Jössefors, there are several smaller communities throughout the municipality all of which have a grocery store, preschool, school and bus connections — Brunskog, Gunnarskog, Glava, Mangskog, Stavnäs/Högerud/Klässbol, and Älgå/Sulvik/Ny.

4. Get a residence permit

Once in Sweden, this is almost always the first thing you need to do. Unless you are from a Nordic country, then you can skip this step. The Swedish Migra­tion Agency (Migrationsverket) handles issues relating to immigration, visas, permits and citizenship.

As an EU/EEA citizen you are entitled to work and live in Sweden without a permit. But if you stay longer than three months you’ll need to register yourself with the Swedish Migration Agency.

5. Reister with the Tax Agency

The most important requirement as a new resident is to register with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket). This registration process ensures you’re added into the system for tax collection, personal identification, marital status monitoring, mailing address information and insurance purposes.

By registering with the Tax Agency, you will be assigned a unique personal identification number. Your legal identity in Sweden hinges on this key number and it is used for everyday official tasks such as opening bank accounts and getting paid by your employer.

6. Get an ID card

Once you’ve got your personal identity number, obtaining a Swedish identity card (ID-kort) from the Swedish Tax Agency is a logical next step.

A Swedish ID card is your primary form of identification around the country. It is used for opening bank accounts, using credit cards, picking up packages from the post office, and at doctor's appointments – for example.

7. Register for social insurance

  • At Försäkringskassan you can get registered for social insurances. To receive benefits from Försäkringskassan you will have comply with certain regulations.
    When applying for benefits you must therefore provide information to Försäkringskassan, who in turn assesses this information and decides whether you are entitled to the benefits.

8. Register children for daycare or school

As a newcomer to the municipality, we want to make it easy for you to find the right childcare and schools. Children between the age of 1-6 go to “förskola” or preschool.

9. Get a Swedish driver's license

After one year as a resident, you are usually required to obtain a Swedish driving licence. For that, you contact the Swedish Transport Administration.
